Do you have a favourite top, skirt or pair of trousers that you reach for again and again? Maybe it fits just right, feels lovely to wear, or is one of those pieces you wish you could make in every colour.
In this relaxed workshop, we’ll show you how to create a paper pattern from a much-loved garment without taking it apart. You’ll learn how to trace the key shapes, understand the construction lines, add seam allowances and create a usable pattern that you can take away and make again in your own fabric.
This is a pattern-copying workshop rather than a sewing session, so you won’t be making the garment on the day. Instead, you’ll leave with your copied pattern, a better understanding of how your garment is put together, and plenty of confidence to start planning your next handmade version.
Bring along a few simple garments you’d like to copy and we’ll help you choose the best one to work on during the session. Simple tops, skirts, loose trousers and uncomplicated shapes work best.
All pattern paper and workshop materials are provided. You just need to bring your chosen garments, a notebook if you like to take notes, and your usual sewing curiosity.
This workshop is ideal for confident beginners and beyond. You don’t need pattern-drafting experience, but some basic sewing knowledge will help you get the most from the session.

Workshop Information
What type of garment should I bring?
Please bring one or two garments you would like to copy. Simple, well-fitting garments work best, such as an easy top, a relaxed skirt, loose trousers or a simple dress.
The garment should fit you well, as the pattern you create will be based on that shape. Avoid bringing anything too tailored, heavily structured, lined, very delicate or complicated.
Bringing a choice of garments is helpful, as your tutor can guide you towards the one that will work best during the session.
Skill level
This workshop is best suited to confident beginners and beyond. You do not need any pattern-drafting experience, but you should have made a few garments from sewing patterns and have a basic understanding of garment construction.
Class size
This is a small group workshop with a maximum of 6 students, giving you plenty of time for individual guidance.
Please note
This is a pattern-copying workshop, not a sewing workshop. You will not be sewing your garment during the session. You will be creating a paper pattern from an existing garment, ready to take away and use for a future project.
